LPG prices surge up to Rs400 per Kg amid black marketing

March 13, 2024 (MLN): LPG prices in Pakistan have spiked up to Rs400 per kg in hilly areas like Gilgit-Baltistan and remote areas as black marketing of the commodity continues during the month of Ramadan.

Moreover, LPG is being traded at prices ranging from Rs300 to Rs320 in other cities.

This differs significantly from the LPG rates of Rs257.59 for consumers and 256.79 for producers as quoted by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on March 01, 2024.

It is crucial to note that LPG is not available anywhere in the country at the official price with hoarding activities increasing on a daily basis.

While OGRA has initiated a crackdown against illegal hoarders to ensure that LPG is sold to end consumers at prescribed rates, the government still needs to increase local production to ensure a viable and long-term solution to this problem.

Additionally, there is also an immediate need to ensure compliance with official prices by LPG plants.
