IMF not asking Pakistan to renegotiate CPEC IPP deals: Fund clarifies

June 16, 2022 (MLN): The International Monetary Fund (IMF) did not ask Pakistan to renegotiate CPEC IPP contracts, Esther Perez Ruiz IMF Resident Representative for Pakistan said in a statement issued on Thursday.

“These claims are simply untrue,” she claimed.

“Rather, the IMF supports the government’s multipronged strategy to restore energy sector viability which shares the burden of restoring viability across all stakeholder government, producers, and consumers,” she added.

A week ago, the news item was taking rounds in different sections of media that the IMF has asked the Pakistan side to renegotiate the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) energy deals before making payments of around Rs300 billion to the Chinese power plants.

It is pertinent to mention that the government of cash-strapped Pakistan is on its toes to comply with IMF’s condition to resume the EFF program.
