Govt imposes ban on export of bananas, onions for Ramadan

March 06, 2024 (MLN): The government has decided to ban the export of bananas and onions till the end of Ramadan to control prices in the domestic market.

As the prices of both food items are on a rising trend, Chief Secretary Punjab Zahid Akhtar Zaman wrote a letter to the government urging for a complete restriction on their export to prevent the nation from suffering due to escalating prices.

Subsequently, the government has banned the export of bananas to Afghanistan and Iran while onion producers are restricted from selling to Gulf countries.

The upward trend in prices became further apparent when the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) released the weekly inflation figures for the week ending February 29, 2024, which showed a 5.25% increase in the price of bananas and a 2.87% rise in the price of onions.
