January 17, 2024 (MLN): China emerged as the largest investor in Pakistan in 1HFY24, with a net direct investment of $292.8 million, followed by the HongKong and United Kingdom which invested $190.96m and $121.62m respectively, according to the data issued by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
During December, China remained the largest investor, followed by Hong Kong and the United Kingdom with net FDI of $56.9m, $49.44m, and $32.89m respectively.
It is pertinent to note that the total net FDI in 6MFY24 stood at $862.6m, up by 34.78% YoY compared to FDI of $640m in 6MFY23.
Despite China holding the majority proportion (33.94%) of direct investments in the country during 6MFY24, the investment has decreased substantially by 12.1% YoY when compared with the figure of $333.1m in 6MFY23.
Hong Kong’s contribution in net FDI stood at $190.96m (22.14%) in the 6MFY24, up by 61.24% YoY compared to $118m in SPLY.
The third major investor during 6MFY24, UK’s share was 14.1% with a direct investment of $121.62m, up by 0.4% YoY.
Other major important investors were the Netherlands, United States and Singapore with a net FDI of $69.38m, $60.89m, and $33m respectively during 6MFY24.
The Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI), which represents an investment in the equity market (both direct and indirect) during December stood at $32.2m.
On a cumulative basis, FPI showed an investment of $71m during 6MFY24, against a portfolio divestment of $1.033bnm in 6MFY23.
The US emerged as the biggest portfolio investor during the month, as it invested $31.3m during the month and $127.9m during 6MFY24.
The total foreign investment in the review month clocked in at $243.3m, compared to a divestment of $968.8m in December 2022.
On a cumulative basis, within 6MFY24, total foreign investment stood at $933.7m against a divestment of $393.3m in 6MFY23.
